Mouse Control in Houston

Signs You Have a Mouse Problem

Mice are nocturnal and stay hidden, so the evidence they leave behind is often the first indicator of an infestation. Knowing what to look for helps you act before a small problem becomes a larger one.

• Droppings: Small, dark, about a quarter inch long with pointed ends. Found near food storage, along baseboards, and inside cabinets. Rat droppings are larger and blunt-ended, which helps distinguish between the two.
• Gnaw marks: On food packaging, wooden surfaces, wiring, and drywall. Fresh gnaw marks are lighter in color; older ones darken over time.
• Nesting material: Shredded paper, fabric, or insulation gathered in hidden corners, wall voids, or attic spaces.
• Nighttime sounds: Scratching or scurrying inside walls or attics is a common indicator of mouse activity.
• Grease trails: Rub marks or dark smudges along baseboards where mice repeatedly travel the same path.

Why Houston Properties Are Vulnerable to Mice

Houston’s warm, humid climate and periods of heavy rainfall push mice to seek drier, cooler shelter indoors, particularly during and after storms. The region’s construction patterns also play a role. Many homes and commercial buildings have gaps around air conditioning lines, plumbing penetrations, and garage doors that don’t seal tightly at the bottom.

Because mice can fit through openings no larger than a dime, these small, overlooked gaps become entry points. Rodent exclusion, the practice of locating and sealing those openings, is a core part of an effective mouse control strategy in the Houston area.

Health & Property Risks from a Mouse Infestation

Mice can contaminate food and food-preparation surfaces with droppings and urine, spreading bacteria including salmonella. The health risk doesn’t require direct contact: contaminated surfaces or improperly stored food can expose household members without anyone ever seeing a mouse.

According to the CDC, hantavirus spreads primarily through contact with rodent urine, droppings, and saliva. The deer mouse is the most common carrier of the strain that causes illness in the United States. Beyond health concerns, mice gnaw constantly to keep their teeth trimmed, damaging wiring, insulation, and structural materials and creating fire hazards inside wall voids.

Prevention Steps Between Mouse Control Services

Professional treatment works best when paired with basic prevention. A few consistent habits can significantly reduce the conditions that attract mice to a property.

• Seal entry points: Fill cracks and gaps around utility lines, doors, and the foundation. Steel wool or hardware cloth holds better than caulk alone in high-use areas.
• Store food properly: Keep dry goods and pet food in airtight containers. Clean up crumbs and spills promptly.
• Reduce clutter: Clear out garages, attics, and storage areas to eliminate nesting sites mice prefer.
• Maintain the exterior: Trim vegetation back from the structure and keep firewood or stored materials away from exterior walls to reduce outdoor harborage points.
